In order to complete MLO 2 I had to take courses that would aid in my writing and linguistic knowledge and abilities. The courses I took to complete this MLO were SPAN 305, Spanish for the Professions, and SPAN 301, Composition and Oral Practice. In both of these courses I was able to really expand my writing abilities, especially in Spanish for the Professions because I learned how to write resumes and other professional letters all in Spanish. I learned that there were different formats for professional documents depending on the country you were applying to or working in. It also greatly expanded my vocabulary since a lot of the terms used in professional settings are very different than what you’ll find in literature or cultural studies. I was able to expand my understanding of the Spanish language through the composition class because we really focused on how to write something well instead of writing something simple. It felt like a composition class that would have been challenging in English, but this time it was in Spanish, which really aided in my abilities. I hope to continue writing in Spanish in order to continue my growth in the language. I found the composition class to be especially challenging because of the standards I was held up to. I no longer could write like a 13 year old and that would be acceptable. I was attempting to write like a college level native speaker with correct syntax and sentence structure, along with using a sophisticated vocabulary and writing argumentative essays. This is something I still need to work on, which will be difficult without having a professor to refer to. But I believe that practice makes perfect and as long as I keep writing in a sophisticated and professional manner, than the more proficient I will become at it.
