Hispanic Cinema contributed to fulfilling my MLO 3, Literary and Cultural Knowledge with Professor Maria Zielina. This class was a study of culture through the art medium of film. I was able to see different cultures and people from Argentina, Spain, Brazil, Cuba and Mexico. After watching each film, we wrote a reflective journal about the movie. The purpose was not to write a summary about the film, but to reflect on the purpose of the film, the themes, characters, and plot development. We were to analyze the film. The final project for the class was a powerpoint that I made comparing and contrasting two historically referenced Spanish films; Alatriste and Bienvenidos Mr. Marshall. This gave me an opportunity to really analyze the significance of having films based on history, whether they’re historically accurate or a satire on the cultural history. This class added to my knowledge of culture through the entertainment industry, and several of this films I enjoyed greatly and have watched again. Although the class was in English, the films were all in Spanish with subtitles. I did my best not to read the subtitles in order to improve my listening ability.
