This course completes MLO 2: language and linguistic knowledge. I took this course fall of 2013 with Professor Carlos Arrizabalaga. This course is designed for the student to “continue to build proficiency as defined by the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. Content-based instruction develops communicative language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through readings and discussions of authentic Hispanic cultural and literary texts.” During this course we worked on several different writing styles, whether it was a descriptive essay, an argumentative essay, or a short story. At the end of the course, we held a debate with 3 different topics of discussion and used that to practice our oral capabilities. I wish there had been more in class discussion, but the class time was focused on working on our writing abilities including syntax, grammar, punctuation, and orthography. I received useful criticism for my Spanish writings and learned many useful tactics for writing different types of essays. This part of the language learning process is always difficult to become truly proficient in because it takes so much practice and so much feedback before you can actually progress. It is another part of language that needs a long-term commitment before becoming a fluent writer in Spanish. I wish we could have worked more on the oral part of the class, but it was mostly a lecture-based class, which did greatly improve my writing abilities. This course was challenging and useful.
